PX Q400: Highly Efficient Energy Recovery Device

Agrícola Don Ricardo selected ReliX Water, a leading water treatment system provider for the agricultural sector, to design a modern, high-recovery BWRO treatment plant that met sustainability standards while producing high-quality water. Focused on energy-saving technology, ReliX Water chose Energy Recovery’s low-pressure PX® Pressure Exchanger® (LP PX) to reduce the energy consumption and associated emissions of the BWRO system, integrating one PX L140 in the double-stage design.

Low-Pressure PX for Sustainable Agriculture

Plant designers chose to integrate Energy Recovery’s turbocharger to lower the system’s energy consumption and optimize flux across the first and second stages. The brewery collaborated with a leading membrane supplier and Energy Recovery, Inc. to design its reuse system. This innovative wastewater treatment plant was optimized using computational fluid dynamics, utilizing highly selective membranes and Energy Recovery’s efficient turbocharger – a cost-effective solution.

Mexico Brewery Case Study

Resorts and hotels by the Red Sea in Egypt depend on seawater desalination to provide a reliable and energy-efficient source of clean, potable water. The EPC contractor decided to utilize a proven solution they already had on hand, Energy Recovery’s PX Q300, to ensure seamless integration and plant uptime.

In 2021, the joint venture comprised of the companies GS Inima Environment SAU and Constructora Claro Vicuña Valenzuela led the construction of one of the largest desalination plants in the region. Its large capacity required energy optimization to reduce operational costs. GS Inima partnered with Energy Recovery to install its proven and  reliable pressure exchangers, one of the solutions to lower operational energy costs and increase efficiency.

ATACAMA Case Study

Ranitec CETP was able to save energy and costs needed for reverse osmosis systems by partnering with Energy Recovery. The plant chose to incorporate a full suite of product solutions, including the turbocharger, PX® Pressure  Exchanger® energy recovery device (ERD), Aquabold high-pressure pump, and circulation pumps.

Sinochem International and an innovative enterprise focusing on membrane product
solutions for the water treatment industry, to design a treatment facility, using a combination of technologies to pretreat the waste stream. By employing two reverse osmosis (RO) stages and an ultra high-pressure reverse osmosis (UHPRO) stage, Sinochem reduced the process flow rate by 90%, before using a thermal process on the remaining flow to reach zero liquid discharge (ZLD).

The PX Q400 is a notable innovation for Energy Recovery in recent years. It is the company’s highest performing and highest-capacity PX available for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination and industrial wastewater facilities, with a peak efficiency of up to 98%.

At this year’s IDRA World Congress, in addition to exhibiting, Energy Recovery also led important industry discussions, including a curated panel titled “Innovative Pathways: Navigating the Energy-Sustainability Nexus in Desalination”.

One of the recently awarded contracts will include PX installations on a floating desalination barge in the Arabian Gulf, which will produce fresh water offshore before pumping it back to the mainland. Offshore desalination facilities eliminate the need for swaths of coastal land, which is often limited and expensive, making it a viable option for densely populated coastal regions. The contracts in the United Arab Emirates will incorporate both the PX Q400 and PX Q300 models, which offer operational sound levels at just 79 decibels. This will also create safer and better workplace environments for these SWRO plants.

Energy Recovery’s PX can reduce energy use by up to 60% in SWRO desalination facilities and provides the lowest lifecycle cost of any energy recovery device available on the market – significant savings that make SWRO desalination an attractive option to governments seeking to drought-proof their water infrastructure. The announced contracts in the United Arab Emirates are projected to save over 416 gigawatt hours per year of energy, which avoids 201,265 tons per year of harmful CO2 emissions; the equivalent of over 36,000 homes electricity use for one year.

North Africa continues to present a strong demand for SWRO desalination. Morocco is facing a years long drought that drained the country’s reservoirs to 25% full earlier this year, and the country is currently working towards a goal to supply half of its drinking water from desalination by 2030. When completed, these projects will supply over one million cubic meters per day of potable water for municipal and agricultural use – enough water for more than 600,000 Moroccans.

In addition to supplying drinking water, over half of the projected desalination production is earmarked towards the agricultural sector, making desalination and our PX devices a pivotal actor in creating a sustainable ecosystem.”

The PX can reduce energy consumption in desalination by as much as 60% and offers the lowest lifecycle cost of any energy recovery device on the market. When these desalination projects are completed and operating, Energy Recovery estimates that the PX will prevent more than 475,000 tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of removing more than 100,000 passenger cars from the road.

Energy Recovery (NASDAQ: ERII) announced a collection of contracts totaling nearly $17 million to supply PX® Pressure Exchanger® energy recovery devices for desalination facilities in the Gulf region. These PX devices are expected to prevent over 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of removing over 85,000 passenger cars from the road each year.

These contracts include a municipal desalination facility that will produce over 500,000 cubic meters per day (132 million gallons) to a significantly water stressed region. These facilities mark a major milestone in addressing the region’s critical water scarcity challenges and reinforcing sustainable water security. By adopting competitive and efficient seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination technology, including hundreds of PX devices, these facilities will also contribute to ongoing efforts in the region to reduce the cost of water. The facilities are for both municipal and industrial applications and the orders are expected to be fulfilled by Q4 2023.
